Preparing Images for
Your Website

We prefer that you mail us photograph or slide originals; these are then scanned
on our flatbed or slide scanner and are color corrected to match your originals
as closely as possible, before conversion to Web file formats. Your originals
are returned upon final approval of your uploaded website. Digital files are
fine, but they need to be in file formats and resolution which allows for smooth
conversions for the web(such as .aps or .tiff). The following criteria must be
kept in mind while preparing scans or digital files to send us for your website:
Scan the originals at 144 dpi resolution, no larger than 3" x 5" size. This is
a finer resolution than needed for the Web, and allows for retention of detail
during any subsequent cropping, resizing, color correction, point of view adjustments
or enhancements that the image may require. REMEMBER: If you are preparing multiple
images, send us ONE before doing the others, to be sure that it meets web-ready
standards.
Save the image as a Photoshop (.PSD), or .TIFF, or .PICT file format. If you
must save as a .JPG (not recommended), save the image at a size larger than desired
for final website size; ie. a final website image size of 5" should be a 7" .JPG.
DO NOT use additional file compression software to email "bundles" of images,
ESPECIALLY if they are .JPGs. This will ruin your images!
Please send your digital files on a ZIP (100 MB cartridge) or JAZ (1 GIG cartridge).
If you send digital files as email attachments, send only a few at a time to
break up the download time.
NOTES on color cast issues:
Scanner models and computer monitors all differ slightly in the way they interpret
color, which is why the same image appears differently on different makes and
models of machines.
Please remember, with photographs or slides, we have an original by which to
judge color cast problems and correct them...with a digital file, unless there
is an obvious (eg. greenish cast) problem, we have no baseline to judge what
the color SHOULD be.
Furthermore, color on the Web is affected by variables such as the computer platform,
monitor color capabilities and browser type being used by each website visitor
- there WILL be differences!
We specialize in crisp, beautiful graphics, and will give your images our professional
attention and care to ensure as accurate a representation as possible for your
website.
If you have questions, be certain to contact us before you begin scanning.
Finally, if you want to save on the cost of your website by doing much of your
own scanning, you also have the option to save money by sending all your TEXT
FILES already typed out, edited, and spell checked. If you are interested in
this, you should send them as email, or on floppy disks, or 100MB Zips. This
allows us to cut and paste your already digital text into the coding for the
page, which of course reduces the amount of time we spend typing. This cost savings
is then passed onto you. Contact us regarding
